About the work

This new poetry walk is a collaboration between The John Hewitt Society and Irish Artist Richard Carr. It is located in the iconic Waterworks Park in North Belfast.

Geolocated around Swan Lake it presents a layered binaural field recording of the natural sounds found in the park with two poetry readings by Dr. Frank Ferguson of The John Hewitt Society. The first of these poems “A Local Poet” is found at the lower benches on the Queen Mary’s entrance side to the park and the second “Balloons and Wooden Guns” is located at the Armchairs sculpture at the far end of Swan Lake.

Never The Same

Never The Same

In order to get the best experience and to enjoy all of the available sounds, move slowly around the space to allow your GPS to keep up with your movements. When one of the sounds is activated, pause at the spot to hear the full recording. The sound is loudest in the centre of each circle and some of the recordings intentionally overlap, therefore at some points you may hear more than one recording at a time. Moving slowly towards the centre of each circle and away from the previous circle will ensure that you only hear one sound piece at a time. Beginning at the former site of McGurk's Bar, Never The Same allows the relatives of those killed in the McGurk's Bar Bombing of 1971 to share memories of their loved ones and explore the personal aspects of grief and loss. As you move around the locality, different audio recordings will become available. Fifteen people were killed in the bomb, including two children and many more were injured. At the 50th anniversary of the event, the families are still engaged in a 'Campaign for Truth' to uncover the facts about the bombing. Additional sound recordings will continue to be added over the course of 2021. CONTENT WARNING - SOME OF THESE SOUND RECORDINGS CONTAIN CONVERSATIONS THAT DISCUSS THE RESULTING IMPACT OF A PERSON OR PERSONS BEING KILLED BY A BOMB. THE DISCUSSIONS ARE NOT GRAPHIC IN NATURE BUT MAY BE UPSETTING TO SOME LISTENERS. **Listeners should be aware that these recordings have been made via online software in order to comply with Covid regulations and as such may contain some slight glitches. Two by Two: A Sailortown Fable

Two by Two: A Sailortown Fable

Ella is searching for clues and patiently waiting for Noah's Ark to dock at Belfast harbour. Follow her voice on this audio walk and discover the people, buildings, and animals (real and imagined) of Belfast's Sailortown. Find the traces of Ella's story at the blue shapes on the map: Rectangular shapes are the main story points (Durations ~2:00-3:30); and Circles are short fragments echoing along the way (Durations ~ 0:10-0:30). If you want to follow Ella's path more closely, follow the rectangular main story points in number order 1 to 5. Your starting point will be Yorkgate Station Car Park (top left), moving to Benny's cafe, the Rotterdam Bar, the American Bar, the Skate Park on Little Patrick St (bottom left), then the deep dock (top right). Tap on the blue rectangles to check their numbers. But remember that Ella's story has got a bit jumbled up, so its ok to wander and find your own path through the locations on the map. Eventually you'll piece together some of the fragments of Ella's story, just as she is trying to piece together her plan. You can get a hint of the content for a location point by tapping on its marker on the map. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. Belfast Before Flood

Belfast Before Flood

Here in the year 2222, we often wonder what Belfast was like 200 years ago. Come and see for yourself in ‘Belfast Before Flood’ - the new living museum based on the forgotten Belfast of 2022. Using authentic early 21st Century technology and language, this experience is guaranteed to be both educational and entertaining for anyone interested in what life was like before the Great Submersion. Using the quaint antique of technology of mobile smartphones, ‘Belfast Before Flood’ provides a location-activated audio walk that shares the stories of how and why Belfast was the way it was in 2022. And more importantly, how it changed in the intervening years leading to our present day in the year 2222. So celebrate 200 years since the era of peak knowledge and the beginning of the end of life as they knew it in 'Belfast Before Flood'. To begin, tap 'Stream Walk'. Once you see the map, pay attention to your location via the bright blue dot - if you can't see it on the map, tap 'Locate Me' or the small arrow button. You can then find the audio tour locations at the 'sound zones' - the pale blue shapes on the map. The circular shape marks the first sound zone. You can get a hint of the content for a sound zone by tapping its marker on the map. Once you enter a sound zone the audio tour commentary will start, and play through while you remain in the zone. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and passing traffic. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)

PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)

**PARROT FEVER** - a mobile audio story in two cities Words & voice by Emily DeDakis | Sound & production by John D'Arcy After the disappearance (and possible kidnapping) of her English colleague, a U.S. photojournalist navigates a city that feels suddenly less familiar. Follow in the photojournalist's steps and eavesdrop on imagined conversations with her lost colleague. Along the way, she quotes from her colleague’s journalism bible *‘Parrot Fever: Bylaws for the Aspiring Journalists’*, pithy directives about cultivating sources, trust, learning where you belong and learning your craft. --- This mobile audio story is told in seven parts, each planted at a special location. This version, **PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)**, locates each part of the story to a place in Belfast. If you are in Beirut, search the Echoes app for **PARROT FEVER (in Beirut)** and explore the same story across locations in that city. Story locations are marked by the blue shapes on the map. Get a hint of the content at a location point by tapping on its marker on the map. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. Download the walk’s audio in advance to prevent issues with mobile data streaming. Take good care whilst navigating the streets. Be mindful of traffic and fellow pedestrians, and be careful when crossing roads. --- *“For what we see is what we are, for eyes are a projector not only a viewer, for whatever we photograph we always lose.” * - Noir Barakat (@noirbarakat) --- The events and characters of PARROT FEVER are entirely imagined. The story exists out of time and in both of the two cities that inspired it - Beirut & Belfast. Emily is a U.S. native & longtime resident of Belfast. She’s the daughter of a journalist and as a young child was keenly aware of the kidnapping of Associated Press reporter Terry Anderson (1947-2024). Anderson was held hostage in Beirut from 1985-1991 and passed away during the writing of this audio story in April 2024. PARROT FEVER is dedicated to members of the press across the world, recognising the dangers they face - especially native journalists of Gaza and Lebanon, currently under direct attack. Learn more and support the Committee to Protect Journalists: cpj.org --- PARROT FEVER is a companion piece to the film installation ‘to the wire’ (Hosta Projects). Commissioned by NI Mental Health Arts Festival & Hosta Projects. If you have any questions or feedback about this Echoes audio walk experience please contact John D'Arcy (j.darcy@qub.ac.uk)

Peace Wall Belfast Soundwalks

Peace Wall Belfast Soundwalks

Peace Wall Belfast Soundwalks (sound walk at the Peace Wall Belfast) ~1hr15min A binaural immersive experience with six soundscapes composed to highlight relationships between realism and perception of different sonic markers or events occurring throughout the year. It questions how we listen to what we’re seeing, and what we’re seeing is it being heard? Join me for a binaural soundwalk exploring and listening to soundscapes inspired by the spaces surrounding the Peace Wall. What you need: Mobile phone + headphones/earphones Instructions: Go to one of the 6 locations on the map (listed below), walk into the circle, and audio will play (can press pause/play also). Each recording lasts 3 mins to allow you to then listen to the space. Locations: 1.St. Gall’s Ave (bottom) 2.St. Gall’s Ave -Bombay St (Green field) 3.Bombay St – Kashmir Rd 4.Cupar Way – Lawnbrook Ave 5.Cupar Way (middle) 6.Cupar Way – Conway St ///// More information about the Peace Walls: According to CAIN: “Peacelines, or peace walls, are physical barriers between the Protestant / Loyalist community and the Catholic / Nationalist community in certain areas in Northern Ireland. The walls are usually constructed of concrete, stone, and / or steel, and can be over 6 metres tall. The ‘official’ peacelines grew out of barricades that the local communities erected themselves during periods of intense conflict in 1969 (and in later years). When the British Army was deployed in August 1969 it replaced the existing barricades with barbed-wire barriers of its own. It had been hoped that these would only be needed temporarily. However, the barbed-wire barriers were replaced with more permanent structures and over the years new peace walls have been erected and older ones extended in length and height. The peacelines represent the most visible form of the ‘sectarian interfaces’ between the two main communities in Northern Ireland.” (Ulsteracuk, 2019) /// Thank you for visiting and experiencing this artistic research project. Lore from the Lookout

Lore from the Lookout

This is an audiowalk/journey that has unconventional stories that have taken place in some of the most beautiful places in Belfast. The walk is called “Lore from the Lookout” because it combines the narrator’s (myself) initial perspective and how that feeling relates to a story that would be said about the place from around the River Lagan. The places covered in the audio walk are the Queen's Bridge, Titanic, Belfast Harbour and the Salmon of Knowledge. This audio walk is multifunctional. The stories have been recorded in a podcast format and can be listened on other platforms like Youtube and Spotify as well. The podcast is dynamic in its storytelling and is filled with subjective experiences and emotions and how they relate to the stories themselves. It aptly fits in with the platforms, due to Spotify and Youtube's storytelling podcast boom. It is highly recommended to listen to this audio walk with earphones for the best experience and use any transportation of your choice to get from one place to another. Enjoy!
