Signal / Return uses sound ecology to examine acoustic relationships between living organisms - human and non-human - and their connections with the environment. What is it like to experience these sounds while navigating a city and meandering an urban environment?
In this sound walk, audio recordings of animal communication- bat echolocation, are used as a means to guide users to the address of Centre for Art Tapes, where a multichannel, immersive, live screening of Signal / Return may be experienced.
A wide range of species vocalizations may be experienced while walking through the city. Users will experience more sounds as they overlap and intersect, becoming a cacophony the closer one gets to the designated address.
This work was created for the Nocturne 2020 event in conjunction with the Centre For Art Tapes Artist-In-Residence program. Screenings at CFAT are Friday, October 16, 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm, and Saturday, October 17, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm multichannel, immersive soundscape.
Zorica Kelly Markovich
As a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of art, science, and technology, my practice is one of exploration. Engaging through issues of loss, permanence, presence, and absence, I draw reference from biology, anthropology, and neuroscience. The core theme throughout is interconnectedness—relationships within networks, memory, and collective experiences.
