Beginning at the top of Cap Blanc Nez, tune into the voice of the ancestors via VHF radio and reveal layers of time as you descend to meet the sea. The sea is both beginning and ending of everything on earth - where do we fit into this cycle and what layer do we want our story to leave? Search for an ancestor on the beach and look across the channel - perhaps your journey is shared by a walker on the other side, seeking a connection that transcends human experience... when you finish this walk you might like to follow the journey on the other side too? PREPARING FOR YOUR JOURNEY: **Please download the audio and check GPRS is activated on your phone before you set off, otherwise the ancestors will not be able to find you.** **Put your phone away in your pocket and use the paper map for navigation. The sound will play automatically as long as you are following the route correctly and have GPS activated.** **If you can't hear any sound and you are certain you are in the right place, hit the "play" button. A site specific composition by Emily Peasgood, for an original concept by Alison Neighbour. Sunny Sands beach, Folkestone, Kent, England The Sea Gooseberries come and go with the tides. They are ancient messengers—beacons—who wash ashore in times of need, bringing messages from the past and questions for the future. Their arrival used to herald a joyful celebration of light and song in which the whole community joined a collective ritual to bear witness to their magic and celebrate their connections to one another and the natural world. In December 2021 we relived this ritual on this very spot, at sunset on the full moon before the winter solstice, with The Gathering. The Gathering was the finale to a month long Quest to reunite the Sea Gooseberries, where the Song of the Sea Gooseberries was sung live for the first time, telling the story of the balance of the community and their relationship to the natural world being restored, and of looking forward to a brighter future. It remains on the beach as a reminder of this special moment of connection and understanding, as we wait for the Sea Gooseberries’ next visit to our shores. We hope you enjoy listening. THE RESCUE OF THE BENVENUE: A historical sound walk by Steven M Halliday. Folkestone Harbour to Sandgate, Kent, England, United Kingdom. Award winning sound designer and musicologist Steven M Halliday retells the story of the 1891 shipwreck at Sandgate where the full rigged Benvenue ran aground. Using 3D sound design, narration and music the 25 minute sound walk from Folkestone Harbour to Sandgate retells the dramatic events. For whatever reason, you have come to Canterbury. Walk around the 'Cathedral Quarter' with some great thinkers. Will you find life-changing signs or perspectives? There is no time limit, no path, and no prize for finishing first. Listen and think. Do you get a blessing? Does your life change forever? Was this a mystical experience, an economic structure, psychology, or semiotics? As you and your fellow pilgrims walk around, each sees much the same things, the 'signifiers'. But how do you interpret what you see in front of your eyes? What new concepts and structures form in your mind? You may hear advice from characters such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Guy Debord, Jean Baudrillard, Bernard Stiegler, Sigmund Freud, a Zen Buddhist monk (Thich Nhat Hahn), and a mediaeval mystic (the 'Cloud of Unknowing'). Just look at what's in front of you, consider it from their perspectives, and move on in whichever direction takes your fancy. Focus on the process of understanding what you see, in the light of what you hear.
