Location: Montpelier, Vermont, United States

Here_There

Being in a low residency program creates a strong bond with the location where the in person education happens. For one or two weeks in a year, you spend a week of intensive study becoming deeply attached to a place, its streets, topography, and sounds. The campus of VCFA and the town of Montpelier becomes lodged into the fabric of self for everyone who goes through these programs.

This relationship between places becomes even more complicated during remote residencies, which we have all experienced, where our minds are oriented on a place, but none of us are there.

This soundwalk explores that attachment we feel to this particular place, even when we are at home. This collection of field recordings was recorded by students and alumnx in their own hometowns, but meant to be listened to in Montpelier, bridging and blurring the gap between here and there.

Devil's Night Downtown

Devil's Night Downtown

At 6:36 pm on October 30th, 2019, 6 residents of Glens Falls, New York had heart attacks, 5 died within one minute. Each of them were in the downtown area, but the deaths were ruled to be medical and unrelated. An unnamed member of the police took it upon himself to look into the deaths, collecting a series of interviews with witnesses and those close to the deceased. The connections between the victims and similarities in eye-witness testimony haunted the officer, though he had no reason to carry on with his investigation. So, he collected his audio files and emailed them to you, who he knows will find them to be of interest. He hopes you will be able to make sense of the madness, or at the very least, share in his.
