The Whalesong Project: Berlin - Making Music With Six Monumental Buildings

The Whalesong Project: Berlin - Making Music With Six Monumental Buildings

HOW TO WALK THIS SOUND WALK: 1. Download the Walk beforehand! (oval button with indication of MB next to the 'STREAM WALK' button above this text) Even if you have a very good mobile data contract, the most uninterrupted experience is ensured when the sound walk is already downloaded to your Echoes app. 2. Activate the 'Autoplay' function! When you click 'STREAM WALK' you access the walk. You will enter a map screen and at the top right hand is a 'hamburger menu' (the three horizontal stripes)! Click there and you will be presented with the 'Autoplay' option at exact that position on your screen. 3. Use so-called 'open headphones'! Open headphones have the advantage that you can hear outside noises more easily and therefore offer better environmental awareness. Enjoy! and drop me a DM about your experience via insta @alexanderjheil Short Description: Making Music With Six Monumental Buildings allows you to immerse yourself in the nocturnal soundscapes of six monumental buildings, while taking a walk around the Museum Island located at the historic center of Berlin, Germany. The piece will redirect your attention and alter your experience of the place and your surroundings. The result is a new, or rather a renewed perception of the place through an augmented acoustic environment. You can find a full description of this project on my website: https://alexanderjohannes.com/thewhalesongproject-berlin/ Buildings: Altes Museum Berlin (inner portico), Berliner Dom (center under dome), Deutsches Historisches Museum (Schlüterhof), Friedrichswerdersche Kirche (choir), Neues Museum Berlin (Ägyptischer Hof), former Staatsratsgebäude der DDR (State Dining Room).

The Witness’ Scars. Assembling Tales of Leipziger Str.

The Witness’ Scars. Assembling Tales of Leipziger Str.

DGS: https://vimeo.com/saveriocantoni/introduction English: A Greek statue and his laurel crown. Artifacts rescued from the ruins of the Wertheim department store tell their story; a tale that reveals the fraught legacies which lie beneath the facade of empire and the promise of capitalism. An ongoing artwork collaboratively developed by Nicole Angela Pearson (she/her/they) and Saverio Cantoni (they/them) by invitation of Kandis Friesen (she/her), The Witness’ Scars takes the form of an ongoing journal: assembling different stories, often untold or hidden within mainstream narratives around Leipziger Straße in the center of Berlin, The Witness’ Scars will evolve during the coming year as a resonating chamber where the memoir of a stone-carved Greek boy meets a much older Laurel entity and her wisdom – They have witnessed the unfolding of events in Leipziger Straße, from the rooftop of Wertheim Department Store; now they leave the oblivion of the museum basement where they have been confined during the last several years to remember and recount untold perspectives that complicate a well-known narrative driven by economic profit and imperialism. From the onset, this work has been conceived to be accessed in spoken English or DGS (German Sign Language). Transcripts in written English and German are available for consultation. The work’s sonic experience has been designed to be mainly available through the geo-located sound walk app Echoes. Considering that mobility possibilities are subjective and vary significantly from one individual to another, the artists will continuously update a timeline-based sequence that can be accessed online regardless of geolocation. German: The Witness’ Scars.

Art & Architecture in the DDR

Art & Architecture in the DDR

Multicultural friendships, education, science and space travel: the leitmotifs of socialist iconography preached the great potential of its people and brought colour and texture to the drab prefabricated concrete slabs of the socialist cityscape. Architecture was the ultimate articulation of GDR planning principles and cultural policy, as a medium through which the state could disseminate their power. Kunst Am Bau, as the material manifestation of the overlap between politics, culture and social life, became an integral component of socialist city plan- ning and cultural policy. Often dismissed as mere political propaganda, Kunst Am Bau also represents optimism in a turbulent period and dreams of sharing a harmonious existence with the world. This guided jaunt traces the ideals and realities of GDR society through Kunst Am Bau in and around East Berlin’s most prestigious address, Alexanderplatz. In the process of admiring the few remaining examples and themes of this rapidly fading artistic form, we will take a critical look at the disparity between socialist life as advertised and the state of things as they actually existed, the history of the socialist building and cultural policies, and the present day conditions they face as remainders and reminders of the socialist regime. Please follow the stops in subsequent numbers. Your tour guide is our expert and cultural scientist Natalia Kvitkova.
