CANARIAS DC SOUNDWALK explores the sonic ecologies of the Canary Islands, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, in the geographic region known as Macaronesia.
Currently a work in progress, the project is scheduled to be presented in September 2021 in Washington DC. CANARIAS DC SOUNDWALK will feature a series of geolocated compositions for headphone listening created with sound materials from each of the islands: El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This work reveals what typically remains hidden or unnoticed, exploring the limits and thresholds of perception and attention and celebrating the vitality and creativity of more-than-human agencies and realities.
Sound Scene Festival 2021 is the premiere preview of this new project, presenting a walk with two compositions geolocated along the Metrobranch Trail and Alethia Tanner Park in North East Washington, DC. Presented in partnership with Spain Arts&Culture.
Commissioned and produced by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC. Fieldwork and production assistance: Palma E. Christian Martínez. Additional support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Presented as part of Sound Scene 2021, in collaboration with DC Listening Lounge and the Smithsonian Hirschhorn Museum.
