The Dunes at Drigg

room 1 ECHOES

Location: Holmrook, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom

Explore the sand dunes and beach on our guided audio walk. This sound walk aims to combine art and science to highlight the unique wildlife on the dunes, and the experiences of communities around our coasts!

The full walk takes around 1 hour 40 mins - 2 hours to complete. It includes uneven ground and unfortunately is inaccessible for wheelchair users. We have cattle on site so dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

Please download the walk to your phone before you come to the starting point, which is the car park at Drigg sand dunes, and make sure you allow Echoes to use your location to trigger the sounds as you walk along. It is designed to be experienced through headphones, so make sure you bring yours with you.

The walk begins at Drigg beach car park, Holmrook. From the car park, face away from the sea and follow the directions in the guide.

All instructions and guidance will be offered within the audio, following trails through the dunes and above the high tide mark on the beach away from the waters edge. However, if you are planning walk further onto the beach always check the tide times before your visit.

This walk is part of the Dynamic Dunescapes project, and has been created by RL Wilson and Holly Stainton.

Bentham Inheritage Trail 2124

Bentham Inheritage Trail 2124

Welcome to the Bentham audio in-heritage trail 2124, a story from the future created by young musicians at Pioneer Arts, alongside tutors Jack McNeill and Sophie Cooper. Over a series of creative sessions, participants made field recordings along parts of the Bentham Heritage Trail. Using hydrophones (water microphones), hand-held recorders and hand-drawn notes to document and map the sounds they encountered. Exploring elements of Soundscape Ecology to compose bird choruses with percussion instruments, the participants learnt about the layers of sound in our everyday soundscapes. Then back in the Pioneer workshop they learnt how to edit and manipulate these sounds, combining them with live instruments, electronic MIDI controllers, audio effects, erasure poetry and spoken word. A story emerged within the group imagining a cautionary tale about extra-terrestrial visitors, and machine-engineered creatures brought back from the brink of extinction. This story unfolds along the Bentham Heritage Trail, just seek out the six QR code locations along the route (there’s also a map available). Then take your time listening to the short audio chapters and let your imagination wander in this environment of the past, present and future…
