Hydrology 2.0 :: Media Mediterranea 27 H2O Interface

38 ECHOES

Location: Pula, Istria, Croatia

Hydrology 2.0 is a new Sound Walk created for Media Mediterranea 27 “H2O Interface”. This work is best experienced with headphones.

Hydrology 2.0 Sound Walk is a new immersive sound walk by Leah Barclay that invites festival participants to explore the hidden acoustic ecologies of global oceans and waterways. This technologically mediated listening journey transforms the site into a dynamic sonic environment that reveals the rich life beneath the surface of rivers, oceans, and lakes.

Drawing from over 300 hours of hydrophone recordings collected from global aquatic systems over a decade, this interdisciplinary project transforms scientific research into an artistic experience. The soundwalk bridges art, science, and environmental awareness, allowing participants to explore the soundscapes of global aquatic ecosystems in new ways.

Grounded in the intersection of art, science and technology, Hydrology 2.0 explores how sound can reveal hidden ecological information. The recordings demonstrate how listening can provide insights into environmental changes that are invisible to the naked eye. The soundwalk becomes a powerful sonic experience that reveals the complex acoustic ecology of aquatic ecosystems across the planet, challenges traditional modes of environmental perception, and demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding ecosystems. This immersive exploration features the voices of local communities alongside the underwater sounds, creating a multi-layered sonic narrative that connects human experience to water as a interface. Experience this unique premiere that invites you to listen deeply to our planet's waterways and discover the soundscapes flowing beneath the surface.

The sound walk will adapt and change throughout the festival, the full loop will take approximately 30 minutes to walk, and the sounds can be listened to in any order. It is recommended to walk slowly, walking into the active location will tigger the audio to play. This project runs as part of the exhibition from 28th of May till 6th July 2025.

WE HERDED SHEEP TOGETHER stories and music about human relationships with animals a project by Karmina Šilec We tiptoe around the truth. The defence of animal rights is a debate always intertwined with personal and cultural beliefs. We all—meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans alike—can be advocates for animal rights and believe in the ethical treatment of animals in agriculture and industry. Sheep are essential to the human story. Among animals, the sheep has had an extraordinary impact on human life. This remarkable species has fed, healed, clothed, and supported us—towards prosperity and misery alike; it has helped build empires and devastate landscapes, decorate homes and open new continents, construct cities and inspire works of art. Sheep are also at the forefront of technologies that save human lives and provide crucial insights into mysterious and devastating diseases. Since sheep farming has a long history in Slovenia, this seemingly idyllic animal becomes an entry point into the theme. The sheep is richly present in Slovenian tradition—from Saint Isidore, who appears as both shepherd and warrior in folk songs, to numerous personal and place names derived from sheep-related terms. Inspired by the entangled history of humans and animals on Slovenian soil, the project resonates across various regions of Slovenia, primarily in places associated with sheep farming or sheep processing, including slaughterhouses. Invoking this animal might seem “esoteric,” were it not for the fact that we are surrounded by sheep—sheep that are made to speak, and to speak about us. Narratives: Mladen Dolar: CROSSBREED (performed by: Mladen Dolar) Teya Brooks Pribac: PUMPKIN (performed and produced by: Teja Brooks Pribac) Karmina Šilec: MEDI, the innocent mute shepherd (performed by: Minca Lorenci) Music: Karmina Šilec: LUNGS is an electroacoustic composition created from the sounds of instruments whose bellows are made from sheep’s intestines (bagpipes, diples, accordion). Karmina Šilec: UP AGAIN is based on the sounds of string instruments with strings made from sheep intestines and the polyphony of a female vocal ensemble. Karmina Šilec: ALONE (electroacoustic music and vocals) Karmina Šilec: PASTORAL (bagpipes, electroacoustic music, vocals, spoken word) Samuel Barber / Karmina Šilec: AGNUS DEI (sounds of sheep and arr. of Agnus Dei) Performers: Kebataola ensemble, Andrej Fon, Choregie project choir, Gregor Zorc, Gregor Luštek wrapping up with silence blades of blessing necks of the establishment stains of silences ends of trying embraces of blows forgotten sanctities lowered eyelids submissive muscles open veins trembling nostrils absent faces consecrated torment parched throats numb intestines sensual gains calculating deceptions numb udder enchanted eyeballs overgrown shame transformed bellies living disgusts narcotic freedom stacked vows insolent indifference sensitive detachment immersing in another myth prayers stamped in leather deaths united take your deaths with you (Karmina Šilec) Supported by: Ministry of Culture Republic of Slovenia, Maribor Municipality

Download the app https://explore.echoes.xyz/ and then open QR code in app. Use headphones while walking within the Pavilion. An extra-national Pavilion for the Venice Biennale, a floating acoustic architecture, the 15th geo-located audiowork in the pan-European "Open Form Pavilion of Air" series by Robert Curgenven. Presented in conjunction with Dirk Yates & Speculative Architecture (AUS) https://www.instagram.com/speculativearchitecture/ Information on the Open Form Pavilion of Air series at https://www.recordedfields.net/installations/open-form-pavilion-of-air/ details on this piece at https://www.recordedfields.net/installations/venice-open-form-pavilion-of-air/ Walk slowly to allow sounds to enter gradually, notice the borders of these zones where new sounds fade-in, spend time in some places to notice the long sounds develop, how the view morphs with the sound. Padiglione Dell'aria di Venezia Modulo Aperto (Venice Open Form Pavilion of Air) is a floating roof of sound across Giardini della Biennale in Venice, triggered by GPS and accessed via a smartphone, headphones and the echoes.xyz app. Inspired by Polish architects Oskar & Zofia Hansen’s “Open Form” architectural concept (ca. 1959), this audiowork is one of 15 locations in 9 countries in the pan-European Open Form Pavilion of Air series, using sound and site-mapping to offer a playful renewal and reframing of public space as an essential place of engagement for the community. By walking through different zones within Giardini della Biennale, while using your mobile phone, the Echoes app and headphones, you become a participatory listener producing a composition in real-time. Your navigation creates a unique choreography via GPS, combining and changing sounds mapped within the Giardini through the app. Hear this unique coastal and quasi-urban international arts & architecture location become transformed by the sounds forming this floating acoustic architecture, revealing an immersive, profoundly spatial and physical experience. The Pavilion has no visible presence outside the app and can only be accessed and enjoyed at Giardini della Biennale. This piece is the final work of 15 in the Open Form Pavilion of Air series - it aims to provide a link between Umberto Eco's writing on "Opera Aperta" (Open Work) and the Hansen's Open Form Architecture - creating an overarching structure but also aperture between these points through which politics and architecture as a kind of 'opera scultpture' can meet and exchange a spatial dialogue. An overview of the Open Form Pavilion of Air series via RTÉ Culture: https://www.rte.ie/culture/2023/0327/1366079-new-music-dublin-welcomes-you-to-the-open-form-pavilion-of-air/ On the Artist - https://www.recordedfields.net/ Robert Curgenven is an extra-disciplinary artist producing large-scale audiovisual experiences, albums, performances and installations. His work emphasizes physicality, our embodied response to sound and its correspondence to location, air, weather and architecture. Reviews span the Guardian (AU) citing his "evocative" and "expansive \[pipe] organ work", "epic... remarkable music" (Wire, UK), "true sound art" (Washington Post), "astounding" (FACT mag, USA) to ★★★★ from Mojo (UK). Curgenven has produced works and installations for National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Poland (Krakow), Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw), Palazzo Grassi (Venice), Transmediale (Berlin), Modern Art Museum of Medellin (Columbia), National Sculpture Factory (Ireland), New Music Dublin and the National Film and Sound Archive (Australia). He has presented live performances at festivals including Sydney Festival (Sydney Town Hall), Maerzmusik (Kraftwerk Berlin), TodaysArt (The Hague), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), Ultrahang (Budapest), Insomnia Festival (Tromsø/Norway), Cork Midsummer and was an artist for the EU's SHAPE (Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe) platform in 2019. Curgenven is an associate composer with the Contemporary Music Centre (Ireland), has produced radio works internationally including national radio in Australia (ABC Classic FM) and Ireland (RTÉ Lyric FM) and since 2008 has been a guest lecturer in music and sound at Universities, Conservatoriums and tertiary institutions internationally. "Curgenven makes the point that sounds are fundamental to our perception of the world... hearing the complexities of a place and time is intersected by memories of the familiar which are in turn displaced and transformed.” Realtime Magazine (AUS) “Behind the music lurk such \[disparate] presences as Alvin Lucier, King Tubby, Murray Schafer and Eliane Radigue.” The Wire Magazine (UK)
