Viktor Sandström - Improvisation för 16 operatorer

Improvisation för 16 operatorer (2019) är ett verk som togs fram i Kungliga Musikhögskolans konsertlokal Klangkupolen. I sitt originalformat är det ett stycke i 12 stämmor, utspridda över diskreta högtalare. Versionen som presenteras här är en binaural hörlursmix, genom en simulerad version av konsertlokalen. Stycket arbetades fram under en period av en vecka, då Viktor med hjälp av en egenbyggd kontrollyta kunde styra ett instrument bestående av 16 oscillatorer kopplade i en frekvensmodulerande och rundgångsframkallande formation. Stycket består av ett antal överlagrade improvisationer på detta instrument, som mellan tagningar finstämdes och flyttades om till olika högtalare i rummet. Stycket är som en studie i instabilitet som ett utforskande av ett instrument.

Viktor Sandström är en kompositör och musiker med en bakgrund som cellist och pianist inom klassisk och improviserad musik. Ursprungligen från Göteborg med en examen i elektroakustisk musik från Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. Hans verk rör sig mellan instrumentbyggande, komposition och installation, där interaktivitet och “liveness” är nyckelord för hans musik. Han arbetar huvudsak med syntetiska ljud och fältinspelningar, gärna med generativa eller algoritmiska processer. Verksam som uppträdande musiker, samt inom teater och film som tonsättare och ljuddesigner. Under en längre sjukdomsperiod utvecklade han ett intresse för programmering och ickelinjär komposition, vilket nu blivit del av hans utforskande process. Centralt i hans musik är idén om att elektroakustisk musik har tillgång till alla ljudande verktyg, som möjliggör associativ och gestaltande musik, subjektiv musik som kommunicerar i bilder eller känslor.

Improvisation för 16 operatorer (Improvisation for 16 operators) (2019) was created for the Klangkupolen concert hall at the KMH in Stockholm, and is originally composed for 12 speakers. This binaural version for headphones is a simulation of the concert space. Using a custommade device, the composer controls an instrument consisting of 16 oscillators connected to a formation for frequence modulation and feedback. Layers of improvised sessions on this instrument, with different tunings and changes of loudspeaker positions resulted in this composition, a study in instability as well as of the instrument as such.

Viktor Sandström is a composer and musician. Originally from Gothenburg, he moved to Stockholm to study electroacoustic composition at the KMH. His work spans from instrument building to composition and installation. Interactivity and “liveness” being key words for his music creation. Using mainly synthetic sound and field recordings along with generative or algorithmic processes, he is active as a performer as well as a sound designer and composer for the stage and movie screen. He has developed a keen interest for programming as well as non-linear composition, which now has turned into a natural part of his creative process. Central to his music is the idea that electroacoustic music has access to all sounding tools, which enable associative and expressive music, a subjective music that communicates in images or feelings.
