Once known as the "Pearl of Asia," it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina in the 1920s. Phnom Penh, along with Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, are significant global and domestic tourist destinations for Cambodia. Founded in 1434, the city is noted for its beautiful and historical architecture and attractions. There are a number of surviving French colonial buildings scattered along the grand boulevards.

Pear Thmei (New Market) was built by the french in 1937 and is one of the biggest markets in Asia.
The market is shaped in the form of a cross with a huge dome.
In it you will find everything you want, jewels, clothes, food, antique coins and many other things.
If you like to rummage in the markets, this is the place to go.

The legend goes during the 14th century a woman named Penh discovered four buddha relics hidden in a floating trunk in the river. She put it at the top of the small hill where she lived, and built a shrine (Wat) to protect it.
The name of the sight and the city come from this story: Wat Phnom (Temple of the hill) and Phnom Penh (The hill)

The Olympic Stadium was built during the 60’s under the management of the famous khmer architect : Van Molyvann.
It has no less than 60,000 seats and a lot of  sports equipments.
On the 1st of september 1966, Charles de Gaulles spoke in front of a huge crowd in order to congratulate the Prince Sihanouk for his willingness to develop Cambodia.
The stadium is mainly famous for its 40 to 70-year-old women who come everyday to work out with a traditional music.

The National Museum was built just next to the Royal Palace, between 1917 and 1920.
It was designed by a french historian, curator and author named George Groslier, who revived the interest for cambodian art.
Made from terracotta, this beautiful building is surrounded by amazing gardens.
The museum is divided in four parts which all house the best collection of Khmer sculptures, dated from 4th to the 14th century.
Old potteries and bronzes are also present in the museum.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to take pictures of this beautiful works.

Located along the river, the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh was built over a century ago. It is the official home of the King of Cambodia and its entire name is : Preah Barum Reachea Veang Chaktomuk.
The whole family lives in it, as a consequence some areas are closed.
The palace is structured into 9 buildings, the most remarkable being the throne room, the Napoleon III, Phochani and Chanchhaya Pavilions, and of the course the Silver Pagoda.
You will also be able to see a Angkor Temples’ model.

The Central Market (Khmer: ផ្សារធំថ្មី, "Psah Thom Thmey", "New Grand Market"), is a large market constructed in 1937 in the shape of a dome with four arms branching out into vast hallways with countless stalls of goods. Initial design and layouts are from French architect Louis Chauchon. Construction works were supervised by French architects Jean Desbois and Wladimir Kandaouroff.

It is located in Cambodia's capital city, Phnom Penh. When it first opened in 1937, it was said to be the biggest market in Asia; today it still operates as a market. From 2009 to 2011, it underwent a US$4.2 million renovation funded by the French Development Agency.

The market opens from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is, for tourists, a 'must see' stop. Most tourists visit this market because they want to see the extensive amount of products that are offered for bargain. The four wings of this gigantic yellow dome are teeming with stalls that sell goods ranging from gold and silver, antique coins, money exchange, men's and women's apparel, clocks, books, flowers, food, fabrics, shoes, souvenirs, fish, seafood, dessert, luggage, and countless other products.

The Silver Pagoda is located on the south side of the Royal Palace, Phnom Penh. Formerly, it was known as Wat Ubosoth Ratanaram. The temple's official name is Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morakot (Khmer: ព្រះវិហារព្រះកែវមក៌ត, "Temple of the Emerald-Crystal Buddha") which is commonly shortened to Wat Preah Keo (Khmer: វត្តព្រះកែវ) in Khmer.

The vihara houses many national treasures including gold and jeweled Buddha statues. Most notable is a small green crystal Buddha (the "Emerald Buddha" of Cambodia) — some sources maintain it was made of Baccarat Crystal in 17th century but that's not possible since Baccarat Crystal didn't exist until 18th century; other sources indicate it was made in 19th century by Lalique, a glass designer who lived in 19th-20th century, what makes more sense taking into account that the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh was built using the Bangkok's Grand Palace as a model so the Bangkok's Emerald Buddha would be copied at the same time; but there are not reliable sources — and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds, the largest of which weighs 25 carats. It was created in the palace workshops during 1906 and 1907, the gold Buddha weighs in at 90 kg and is dressed in royal regalia commissioned by King Sisowath. During King Norodom Sihanouk's pre-Khmer Rouge reign, the Silver Pagoda was inlaid with more than 5,000 silver tiles and some of its outer facade was remodeled with Italian marble. However, only a small area of these tiles are available to be viewed by the public on entering the pagoda.

The Independence Monument (Khmer: វិមានឯករាជ្យ, "Vimean Akareach") in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, was built in 1958 for Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It stands on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city. It is in the form of a lotus-shaped stupa, of the style seen at the great Khmer temple at Angkor Wat and other Khmer historical sites. The Independence Monument was designed by the influential Cambodian modern architect Vann Molyvann.

During national celebrations, The Independence Monument is the center of activity. A ceremonial flame on the interior pedestal is often lit by a royal or high official on these occasions, and flo

ral tributes line the stairs. Every year, The Independence Monument is visited by foreigners and locals alike.


Behind the monument is the newly constructed Statue of Norodom Sihanouk.

Wat Ounalom (Khmer: វត្តឧណ្ណាលោម; Khmer pronunciation: [ʋɔət ʔunnaːloːm]) (also Wat Unnalom and several other spellings) is a wat located on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, near the Royal Palace of Cambodia. As the seat of Cambodia's Mohanikay order, it is the most important wat of Phnom Penh, and the center of Cambodian Buddhism. It was established in 1443 and consists of 44 structures. It was damaged during the Khmer Rouge but has since been restored. The main complex houses a stupa that contains what is believed to be an eyebrow hair of Buddha and an inscription in Pali.
