The building offers no services to current students, but to alumni! The building today is used for Alumni Association Executive Board Meetings and Events Sponsored by the University or Alumni Association. The Association's Executive Board and its committees meet regularly in the Ruth Horowitz Alumni House to plan programs and interact with the University community. The Alumni Association works jointly with the University to offer a wide variety of programs, activities, and services to encourage continued alumni involvement. In 1981, Kean university purchased the Pingry school, which included buildings and land of what is now the East Campus. In 1982, the Alumni House was dedicated to Ruth Horowitz. As a first grade teacher and Kean Alum, Ruth Horowitz dedicated much of her life to education and student enrichment. Horowitz advocated for teachers and students alike, having works published by numerous education organizations such a Childhood Education and New Jersey Education. Welcome to Harwood arena. This building contains a large gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts and offices for the athletic department. There is an 1/8th mile jogging track overlooking the arena and numerous team locker rooms on the underground level. It's a very distinct building since you can see the large glass facade from afar. When visiting teams and parents walk in and see the sheer size of the ceiling, the overall space, and the lighting, they are highly impressed and it's a huge aspect to the recruiting process and overall appearance of Kean University.  It's important to know that the existing building is D’angola, that houses physical education, and the newer part is Harwood which is the athletic department. Thank you for visiting Harwood arena. Harwood arena was built in 2006 and is the main attraction for sporting events here at Kean University. The arena was named after Lowell Harwood to honor his leadership and generosity to Kean and the athletic department. Mr. Harwood decided Kean needed to update and renovate the athletic department, so athletics was on the main campus for 2006 on. Harwood arena was originally a parking lot used during game day for tailgates and actual Kean graduation ceremonies until this building was built. And also again, although it's one large building because they merged them together, separately they are D’angola and Harwood. Thank you for visiting Harwood Arena. Welcome to The Carole hynes field house. This building contains a 10,000 square foot strength and conditioning facility for the use of student athletes to reach their fitness goals. It holds a concession stand on the first floor and free weights, cardio equipment, and cross trainers on the second floor with a balcony to overlook the Alumni stadium for sporting events. The field house was built in 2010 as the last piece of athletic facility at Kean University. It is surrounded by Alumni Stadium, Tennis courts, Jim Hynes Baseball stadium, and cougar softball fields. This building was named in the memory of Joseph A. D'Angola and Anita B. D’Angola; they both once held very important positions within athletics years ago. This gym was the original building for the athletics of Kean University and was built in 1963. In 2006, the gymnasium was renovated and updated, and is now known as an athletic training and rehabilitation center for the school and its athletes. Welcome to the D’Angola Gymnasium. This building contains an athletic training and rehabilitation center for the school and its athletes and now includes the university’s main weight room and fitness center. It also includes the university’s pool, with six lanes of swimming. This part of the building also includes the Physical Education department offices along with classroom space for certain athletic concentrated majors as well. Now, you will hear from Kean’s head athletic trainer about more features that are included in D’Angola and how you may use them to your advantage.

Welcome to Cougar Residence Hall. This building contains top notch suits which each include two double bed rooms, a common area, and a bathroom that includes a private shower and toilet. The first floor of the residence hall includes a room lounge, a game room, a business center, a laundry room and a small kitchen. Each floor in the building contains 15 suits on each floor along with two community study spaces, a larger general social lounge, and there are also resident assistants to make sure everything runs smoothly. This dormitory houses about 385 students each year. Now, you will hear from the residence hall director about more things that are available in the dorms, and what to do for fun as a new resident as well.

Welcome to the New Freshman Residence Hall. This building contains top notch suits which each include two double bed rooms, a common area, and a bathroom that includes a private shower and toilet. Each floor of this building has 15 suits, a common area for the entire floor, and two resident assistants to make sure everything runs smoothly. It also includes the university’s first ever live-and-learn community on the eighth floor, which is reserved for students who wish to study sustainability and natural applied sciences. Now, you will hear from the residence hall director about more things that are available in the dorms, and what to do for fun as a new resident as well.

The Upperclassmen Residence Hall is a dorm residence on campus. Two to three double occupancy bedroom apartments or four single bedrooms are available with a living room area, kitchen, and bathroom. This dorming residence also holds the all-you-can-eat style cafeteria on the first floor of the building.

Liberty Hall is a building where history classes are held. Not only is it a place for learning, but it is also a museum that holds pieces of history and stands as the center of the American Revolution, during that time.

- The George Hennings Hall is the brown brick building in between Bruce Hall and The George Hennings Research building. The George Hennings Research building is the large “fancy” grey structure next to The Dorothy Grant Hennings Hall. 

This building is dedicated to research, science, mathematics, and technology. *The building is connected by a bridge to the other Hennings Hall because it was named after Dorothy Grant’s husband. George Hennings taught at Kean when it was just a college and after George's passing, Dorothy made a generous donation to the university, allowing the university to build the research building and name it after George.

- The Dorothy Grant Hennings Hall is the large brown bricked building you see as you're approaching the end of the main parking lot. The Dorothy Grant Hennings Hall, a.k.a Hennings Hall, was named after the Hennings couple who taught education and natural science, now it is home to all education majors. In this building, you can find a variety of degrees and resources that will prepare you for a successful teaching career. for more information, please contact...

*The building is connected by a bridge to the other Hennings Hall because it was named after Dorothy Grant’s husband. Dorothy Hennings taught at Kean when it was just a college and in this building before it was designated just for Education majors.

Both Dorothy and George Hennings were faculty of Kean University. George Hennings taught in the science department and Dorothy taught in the education department.

Townsend is a two-story building, located on the main campus of the University. Townsend opened in March of 1958. This building is named in memory of the late M. Ernest Townsend. He was the president from 1929 to 1939. This building is linked to the Industrial Technology Wing and Bruce Hall. These extensions to Townsend were opened in 1963.  During this time Townsend only held offices of faculty, departmental offices, and numerous classrooms. Today Townsend holds much more to accommodate students and faculty. This two-story building contains offices of administration and faculty. This building provides services for students and facilities. The first floor of Townsend has the office of research and sponsored programs. This program helps students receive federal and state grants for the university. The first floor of Townsend also has the legal team of Kean University. The legal team would work with the representation of the university and will also work with faculty issues and concerns. The second floor of Townsend holds the school of environmental and Sustainable studies. Most courses in the environmental program are held in the classrooms on the second floor. The Union office for faculty is also located on the second floor of Townsend Hall. This building also holds the office of Institutional Research which holds all the data for the university.  This office has information regarding the students of Kean University. For example, this office can provide information on how many students receive financial aid and can also give information on the graduation rate of the university. This two-story building is equipped for classes such as biology, chemistry, and physics. This building includes laboratories and lecture halls for instruction in the physical and natural sciences. Bruce Hall also has research laboratories for both students and faculty. The first floor of Bruce Hall contains most biology labs, classrooms, and one lecture hall. There you will also find lab technicians. The second floor of Bruce Hall contains general chemistry, physics, and biology labs and physics facilities. Bruce Hall is where the dean’s office is located. Dean George Chang of the Dorthy & George Hennings the college of science, mathematics, and technology. Bruce Hall is located on the main campus of the University. This building was built and opened in 1960. It is named after Guy V. Bruce. He was a professor emeritus of science.  Bruce Hall was formerly named the Science Building. The name was changed to Bruce Hall in 1963. This building is where most science classes were held and also where the science laboratories were. Eugene G. Wilkins Theatre is home to Kean University’s performing arts program. In this building, students with an interest and/or major for the arts will greatly inhabit this building. Students who are a part of the music department will also have classes in Wilkins Theatre. 

The theatre itself has approximately 915 seats and a box office for performances held by Kean Stage. Kean Stage, or Theatre Management and Programming Office, is known for providing diverse performances, and for supplying students with access to the arts in an affordable manner. 

Apart from Kean Stage, Wilkins Theatre also holds classrooms, private studios where students can practice using their instruments. Wilkins also has the offices of those in the music department as well as a reception hall.

First, students can use the library sources either in-person through their books, or online through their website. This building also houses the tutoring center, the writing center, and the public speaking lab. 

Second, students can find the Human Rights Institute and the Holocaust Resource Center. In this department, students can learn more about human rights issues from all over the world. 

Third, there are different types of study areas found on each floor of the library. The first-floor study area has a Starbucks, and a computer and printer lab. The second floor and the third floor also have study areas, but the third floor is known for being a quiet space.

Thompson was also well known for her creation and collection of World War II letters. Thompson was able to collect these letters from students who were overseas and served in the war. Thompson was also a specialist in children’s literature.

Built in 2010, the STEM building's six floor structure was recognized as a LEED certified building when it first opened up. Nancy Perigo, Research Facilities Manager shares her insights on the buildings.

The STEM Building offers about 16 majors and resources to help STEM students gain experience in their labs. Please feel free to check out the link below for more information.

The STEM building was built in 2010 and designed by Cannon Design. This 133,000 feet six story building was designed with dozens of classes, labs, a 320 seat auditorium for workshops, lectures and events and a 630 person atrium for events, meetings and weddings.

Located right next to Hennings Hall, Hutchinson Hall stands tall with three stories and separated into two buildings. Hutchinson Hall offers classes from Social Science to Architecture; also includes clubs and organizations such as Kean Federation of Teachers, University Senate Offices, University Relations, etc.

Hutchinson Hall was named the “J” building after John Hutchinson, who was named the chairperson for departments such as Sociology, History, Anthropology, Social Welfare and the Faculty Senate. He had received the college’s first “Outstanding Teacher” award due to his experiences. The John O’Meara auditorium was honored after a professor here at Kean University and now a scholarship is offered in his name every  year.

Union Station is the hub of transportation here at Kean University. Formerly on the Leghigh Valley Line, the original spot where the station is now was constructed for freight trains instead of transport. When NJ Transit took over the Line, they decided to build Union Station in 2003 to fill the gap between Roselle Park and Newark. Now the Line goes from New York City all the way to High Bridge. The Station is dedicated to Congressman Bob Franks, who was an advocate for public transportation for New Jersey.

Passengers must have a ticket to board, and tickets can be easily purchased by the nearby kiosks colored orange on the lower floor of the station. The Vaughn-Eames building is the center for Fine Arts here at Kean University. Here students are able to attend classes and studio courses that will progress their creative passion through the arts. The building was built in 1968, named after Lenore Hoffman Vaughn-Eames; a benefactor of the arts and alumni at Kean, called Newark State College at the time she attended. She eventually worked at the college, and her efforts here bolstered Kean University’s reputation for it’s Fine Arts Department.

This six-story, 114,700-square-foot mixed-use building houses the health and computer science programs and serves as a campus gateway since its completion in  September 2016. Funded by $36.9 million in state bonds, the facility was designed by Gruskin Group, which also worked on the Green Lane building, a gateway to the opposite end of campus that has similar exterior finishes. This multipurpose academic building provides an architectural anchor to the eastern end of the campus, helping to define another prominent gateway to the university. This structure is linked to the main campus with flowing paths and outdoor seating passing through a park-like setting to the west of the building.  This link extends the pedestrian-friendly campus plan and further enhances the definition of the campus along Morris Avenue. One of the building’s special features is its state-of-the-art, 500-seat auditorium. Utilizing a Meyer “Constellation” active acoustic system, the space electronically optimizes the acoustics of the auditorium for all of its various activities, including lectures and presentations; playback of 2D or 3D high-definition content complete with surround sound; vocal, choral, and musical performances; and Kean Board meetings.

This six-story building houses health and computer science programs. Here you can view the New York City skyline on one of its balconies or grab a bite at its cafe, Au Bon Pain. To learn more about its history, walk towards the outdoor patio near the entrance of the building.

This building is named after Professor Emeritus Martha Downs, Chairman of the Mathematics Department from 1921 to 1955. Being the academic she was, she graduated from Trenton State College (which is now The College of NJ), received a BS from Columbia University Teachers College, and earned an MA and Ph.D. from New York University's School of Education. She resided in Wharton, NJ, and taught math and physics at Dover High School. During her career, she published “A Comparative Study in Student Abilities,”  was an advisor to the Delta Rho chapter of Kappa Delta Pi or the national honor society in education, and developed a program that was the predecessor of the mathematics major. She passed away at age 77 on January 20, 1970.

This building houses multiple departments, such as health services, counseling services, spiritual wellness, and behavioral intervention. It also is where the food pantry and laptop loan center are located and it’s connected to the campus police department. Kean Hall is the building where you will find the Office of Admissions. You will visit this building during your application process in becoming an undergraduate, graduate, transfer, or online student at Kean University. Kean Hall houses offices belonging to Kean University's administrators, vice president's, and the President of Kean University Lamont Repollet.

The Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success building is also known as the CAS building. It has four floors filled with many different departments and resources for students. On the first floor you will find the Center for Advising, Persistence, and Success (CAPS), One Stop, and the School of General Studies. On the second floor you will find the Veteran Student Services, Career Services, and the Center for International Students. The third floor houses the  School of English and the fourth floor is where the School of Communication, Media & Journalism is found. There are many other resources you can find in the CAS building like tutoring, the writing center, testing rooms, computer labs, and conference rooms. The Karl and Helen Burger Gallery is on the first floor and The Cougar radio station (90.3 WKNJ) is on the fourth floor.

The Miron Student center is located at the Heart of Kean University. This building houses a variety of different student services along with different activities for students to enjoy.

Welcome to the MSC. The miron student center has always been referred to as the heart of Kean University. The original intended purpose of the MSC was to provide students with a multitude of services. The building was originally created in 1962 and since has kept its true purpose: Providing students with a variety of different services. Prior to 2015 the name of the building was  the college center and the university center. The miron student center was renamed   after bill and diane miron. A fun fact about them is that Diane is an alumni of Kean university. For more information about this building's history please contact the historians located in the Nancy Thompson library. Welcome to the msc. The msc is the true heart and best representation of kean university. Within the msc a variety of student organizations and activities can be found. The Future of Dougal hall is bright. Currently Dougal Hall is being reinvented from freshman dorms to a variety of student resident services.

Opened on 2014, January 1st, The Green Lane Academic building stands proudly at the crossroads of Green Lane and Morris Avenue, located nearby the Union NJ Transit Train Station. The Green Lane Academic Building is split between six floors. On floor one, you can find Barnes and Noble where you can purchase school textbooks and a coffee shop to get your morning cup before you start the day. Floors two and three belong to the computer science department. I am joined by Associate Dean Rose Gonella, who shares more information on the services offered at the Green Lane academic building.



“I am Professor Rose Gonella, Associate Dean of the Michael Graves College. The School of Design and the school of public architecture also use rooms on the fourth floor and the third floor. The fourth floor has a specialized Media Lab. The entire floor was designed to simulate a professional design studio with the exception of the moot court room, which is a very specific room and that was designed for the College of Public Administration to teach classes in courtroom procedures. They have a jury box where the judge sits and it's a raised platform, it has big screens and things like that.” 


On the third and fourth floor you will find classrooms, lecture halls,  PC rooms as well as free printing stations located at the corners of the building. Large study rooms dot the rim of the floors. These rooms are available for use when classes are not in session. The fifth floor is home to the School of Design. The material library is located here as well as most design courses. Designed by Gruskin Group, The building was developed with the needs of Faculty and Students as the main focus. Opened on January 1st, 2014, the GLAB building has been home to the Michael Graves College of Design. The open design of the building is vital for the continued collaboration between students, promoting a free flow of ideas and teamwork. Once the school of architecture was established, space was allotted to that department on the 4th floor. For the 2021 school year, the department of Computer Science is now housed on floors two through four, and the school of public architecture has been moved to the Hutchinson building.

There are several faculty housing locations here on Kean campus, there are the older accommodations over on Surrey road, and the brand new ones over on Kean Drive.
I took a tour of one of the new apartments on Thomas Court, which included 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a laundry room, and an open concept living room and kitchen area. The apartment was spacious and wheelchair accessible, which demonstrated to me that the school built these apartments with accessibility and convenience in mind.
Kean’s recent transition into becoming a research institution and a large sum of inquiries led to the need for a new faculty accommodation building. Keans transition into a research focused institution has fueled the need to attract talented faculty from all over the globe, and what better way to attract staff then to offer nice, inexpensive, accessible housing with all of the utilities included. 
The creation of the new faculty housing demonstrates Kean’s desire to diversify and offer accessible options to their staff.

Welcome to the Townley House. To hear more about the services of the Townley House, walk to the back of the house. To hear more about the history of the Townley house, walk toward the where you will see a front porch and Greek Pillars

The Townley house is an 18th and 19th century farm home that represents a family who used to live there. Facts taken from Virginia Stotz's “Building History at the Townley House” article inform that the house was built by William Townley before 1796, which was a small cottage. The house was then sold to William Townley’s son, James Townley in 1796 and this is who the house is named after. William Parcel bought the house in 1848 and added more additions to the house, still seen today. The Kean family got the house in 1950’s and in 1979 the house was nationally listed as a Historic Place. The Townley House has “Good Bones” in the words of Dean Rose Gonella, meaning it is a solid representation of the 18th and 19th centuries, as it still stands today.

The Townley House is the little white Farm House right next to the Kean Hall parking lot. According to the associate Dean of Michael Graves College Dean Rose Gonella the Townley House is not in use, but has been used for different things over the years. Originally it was used as an actual farm house in the 1700’s and 1800’s.. The paramedics used it for a period of time more recently, but it is now vacant. The Facilities department here at Kean is deciding what to do with it from a historical and financial standpoint.

The Greenhouse, according to Dr. Daniela Shebitz is in its first functioning and operating semester, thanks to President Repollet. The Greenhouse is part of a research initiative here at Kean, growing crops through the use of hydroponics (and eventually aquaponics with fish). The system of hydroponics teaches  about sustainable agriculture, and this idea of sustainable agriculture is offered and taught in many different classes at Kean. This is the first semester that some Kean University science classes are utilizing and first handedly planting crops inside.

The GreenHouse’s history is very brief and little is known about when it dates back to. Dr. Daniela Shebitz reveals that the GreenHouse was renovated in the early 2000’s by President AppleBaum for his wife. The renovations then cost about a million dollars and even those renovations did not do much.

You are currently standing in front of the clock tower. The outdoor features of Kean University are some of the main focal points of the campus. The clock tower located in the middle of campus is surrounded by the Miron Student Center, the Nancy Thompson Library, and CAS building. This area is also known as the heart of campus. It was built in 1997 when Kean had officially changed from a college to a university. The clock has exactly four faces so anyone surrounding it can see the time. It no longer chimes, however, when it was first built it chimed to inform students of the hour. Clock towers are known for being a symbol of their university. This is true for Kean and this clock tower can be visible from miles.

You are currently at the rock garden. This is a great symbol of the great fraternities and sororities here at Kean University. Each rock is painted with their symbol. You will notice that each rock has a different color and symbol. Some of these symbols are Greek letters which will translate to the fraternity or sorority’s motto. Some of the fraternities at Kean are Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. Some of the Sororities are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Pho Beta. It is located behind the soccer field adjacent to the Miron Student Center.

The fountain is located directly next to visitor parking. It is a semi-circle made with granite. I spoke with Head Archivist Erin Alghandor who informed me about the origin and meaning of the fountain. It was built in 2004 and the surrounding Estabrook garden and fountain are dedicated to Kenneth L. Estabrook who served on Kean University’s Board of Trustees and advocated for the restoration of the historic Kean Hall. The five streams that form the fountain at the Estabrook garden symbolize the five colleges of Kean University. The five colleges it symbolizes are Wenzhou-Kean in Wenzhou, China, Kean Skylands in Jefferson, New Jersey, the main campus in Union, New Jersey, Kean Ocean in Toms River, New Jersey, and finally, Kean Online which is global.

Welcome to the technology building, this was created as a place where students can demonstrate their skills in robotics and computer manufacturing programs. Now, this building is a place where students take technology, and architecture design, and it’s connected to the daycare center. Please go to the entrance of the building to hear more information from the Chief Information Officer, Joe Marinello.

Welcome to The Technology Building. Back in the late 70s all the way to the 90s, this building used to house large-scale robotics programs when manufacturing jobs were in demand in the United States. The building used to support CAD-CAM programs which stand for Computer-Aided Design, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing, students would work on robotics and 3D printers. Today the building houses the office of Computer and Information Services, a marker space for students studying architecture and design. This building also houses the daycare center and it’s connected to Townsend Hall. The Technology Building is also responsible for all the systems such as emails, KeanWise, Collaboration, and Blackboard. And if the Internet ever goes down, this building is responsible for that. Welcome to Nathan Weiss Graduate School

To hear more about the resources and history, please go to the second floor in the East Campus, Office number 212. Now you are going to hear from Ilaf Sattar Manager Assistant Director for the Nathan Weiss Graduate School college Dean’s office about the resources and history.

Resources 
Nathan Weiss Graduate School offers nine health related programs: they are speech language pathology, counselor, education, athletic training, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, social work, physician's assistant and Psy.Ds sighting which is a psychology program. 
Most of our programs are clinical programs where the students work directly with clientele once they graduate. The colleges have in-house clinics for the Psy.D departments, the council education department, and the speech language department. Most of the classes that belong to our college are either held in the East Campus or in the NAAB building  where our programs are divided and housed. One of the reasons is to hold these classes in these two buildings as they are clinical programs so the students need to work in the clinic spaces. Graduate schools have dedicated clinic spaces for each of these programs so the students spend some time in the classroom, but they will spend a lot of time in the labs. Students from other colleges stop by and you know they're more than welcome to come stop by to ask questions and we do our best to send them to the correct office or if you're able to answer the question we serve them as well.

History
The history behind the name of Nathan Weiss Graduate School was for Doctor Nathan Weiss served as president of Kean College of New Jersey, now Kean University, for 20 years, retiring in 1989 as senior president of the New Jersey state colleges. In 1961, he joined the Newark State College Department of History and Social Sciences and six years later became a full professor and department chair. In 1969, he became president and also continued to teach every year until 1999, 10 years after his retirement. During his tenure, the college was transformed from a teachers college to a multi-purpose institution, becoming the second largest state college at the time of his retirement. He committed himself to the college's growth and development for the students of New Jersey through the creation of numerous academic programs including those in the health and technology fields and graduate school.

Welcome to the Nancy Dryfoos Gallery! This gallery focuses on exhibitions from New Jersey artists with an emphasis on community building. The gallery is connected to the first floor of the Nancy Thompson Learning Commons. I spoke with Galleries Program Manager Christina Fittipaldi, who mentioned that this gallery was named after the renowned sculptor Nancy Dryfoos, who was an active member of the Kean community—both in the arts and in the library. This gallery space was dedicated to her in 1996. Because this is one of the smaller galleries, the space is more of a “cozy” atmosphere. Currently, this gallery focuses on exhibitions from up-and-coming New Jersey artists. The exhibitions here rotate every semester. Students, staff, and visitors can visit the gallery during library hours. Welcome to the Karl and Helen Burger Gallery! The Karl and Helen Burger Gallery is located on the first floor of the Center of Academic Success building. According to Galleries Program Manager Christina Fittipaldi, this gallery was named after the parents of previous Kean University fine arts professor Werner Carl Burger—who donated the gallery to the University. As the newest and largest gallery space on campus, students, staff, and visitors can admire new exhibitions from local artists that rotate every semester. Students can come into the gallery at any time for free during viewing hours by providing their name and student ID number. Occasionally, the gallery will host openings and events that can be found on CougarLink. Thanks for visiting the James Howe Gallery. Conveniently located on the first floor of the Vaughn-Eames building, this small gallery space acts as a place for fine arts students and staff to display their works. In an interview with Galleries program manager Christina Fittipaldi, she said that this gallery was established between the 1960s and 1970s. As of 2021, the gallery is offering an internship program for fine arts students to give students more gallery curating experiences. Guests can pop in during gallery hours to see the works of their fellow students and administrators on display. Interestingly, there are a lot of similarities between this gallery and the Student Gallery, which is also located in the Vaughn-Eames building. Visiting the James Howe gallery is a great way to support student activities and arts on our campus.
