Soon after Mary's birth, Henry VIII sent Sir Ralph Sadler, his ambassador in Scotland, to inspect the baby and see that she was likely to grow up as a suitably fit and healthy bride for his son and heir, Edward. This is part of a fanciful 19th century painting of the occasion.
