Alþingishúsið (The Parliament)
This building is the Parliament House; it was constructed in 1880-81. Its public garden is the oldest one in the country. The walls are bare dressed stone, and the interior is plastered. On the north-side facade, the building has different ornaments, including the crown and crest of King Christian IX. Beneath the eaves, "1881" is written in metal numbers accompanied by stars. On four of the second-floor windows, the four guardian spirits of the country are presented in low relief: a giant, a bird, a bull, and a dragon.
