Southern Pavilion

On the 1 July 1889 the Pier Pavilion, Worthing opened at the seaward end of the Pier, and quickly became a popular venue for concerts and other entertainment. On the 31 August 1896 Lt Walter Cole brought his touring variety show to the Pavilion which included a first for West Sussex, early primitive films known at the time as ‘electric animated photographs’. This new wonder of the age is commemorated by a plaque mounted to the exterior of the current Southern Pavilion which replaced the Pier Pavilion when it was destroyed by fire in 1933. The current building opened in 1935 and has had various uses over the years. It was extensively renovated in 2013 and reopened as tearoom and music venue in April 2014.
