Der Burgplatz

Einer der bekanntesten Plätze in der Altstadt ist der Burgplatz am Rhein: Hier stand die Burg, die später zum Schloss der Herzöge von Berg ausgebaut wurde. Über Jahrhunderte wurde im Schloss Politik betrieben und, besonders unter dem barocken Kurfürsten Johann Wilhelm, prächtig Hof gehalten. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zerstörten Krieg und Brand das Schloss. Nach dem Wiederaufbau bot es Raum für die Kunstakademie und die Vertretung der Landesregierung. Die Industrialisierung machte Düsseldorf in kurzer Zeit zur Großstadt. Neue Stadtteile entstanden und es bedurfte neuer Verkehrsachsen, auch entlang des Rheins. Mit Zustimmung des preußischen Königs wurde die Ruine daher kurz vor 1900 abgerissen. Es wurde aber verfügt, dass der Burgplatz nie wieder bebaut werden durfte und der runde nordöstliche Schlossturm erhalten bleiben musste. Da das Rheinufer zum Hochwasserschutz der Stadt deutlich erhöht wurde, liegen unter dem Burgplatz noch heute die Reste des alten Düsseldorfer Residenzschlosses.

One of the most famous squares in the old town is the Burgplatz on the Rhine: this is where the castle stood, which was later converted into the palace of the Dukes of Berg. For centuries, politics were conducted in the castle and, especially under the baroque prince-elector Johann Wilhelm, a splendid court was held here. At the end of the 18th century, war and fire destroyed the castle. After it was rebuilt, it provided space for the Academy of Arts and the state government. Industrialisation quickly turned Düsseldorf into a major city. New districts were created and new transport routes were needed, including along the Rhine. With the approval of the Prussian king, the ruins were therefore demolished shortly before 1900. However, it was decreed that the castle square could never be built on again and that the round north-east castle tower had to be preserved. As the banks of the Rhine were significantly raised to protect the city from flooding, the remains of the old Düsseldorf residential palace can still be seen below the Burgplatz today.
