Alan Turing was a gay mathematician, computer scientist and logician known for his highly influential development to his fields. Despite his contributions to shortening the second world war, he was convicted of gross indecency due to his homosexuality in 1954. His pioneering work is celebrated internationally, but particularly in Manchester, a city where Turing studied and worked towards the end of his life. This statue was unveiled on the 23rd of June, his birthday, in 2001 and is situated with the University of Manchester to his left and Canal Street on his right.
