In 1844, it is not common for people to have bathrooms or running water in their homes. The city's first public bathhouse, Heidekkers Badehus, will be built here this year, opposite of Nedre Foss Mølle. Here they have both showers and bathtubs available. The bathing facility is popular, but it doesn't take long before there are fewer people visiting. The factories further up the river dispose waste materials in the water. Toxic waste substances make the population in the area sick because they use Akerselva as their drinking water. It only takes a few years from when the factories start up, until the fish start to die. The bath master no longer has control over the quality of the water in the bathing facility. They get a bad reputation because of the water quality, and closes after only a few years.
