Neptune is an abstract sandstone sculpture on a concrete plinth and was made in 1998 in Maleny, Queensland. The artwork was created by the artist Fiona McCarron and was on loan to UniSC from 1998 prior to being purchased in 2010. The artwork is 140 x 60 x 40 cm in size. She started her art career as a sculptor working with marble and granite. Stone carving is the process of removing the unwanted stone and revealing the sculpture within.
Each work develops a life and emotion that reflects the nature around me. Like carving stone she remove the areas that feel unnecessary by painting out, what emerges is a series of stone forms balancing or flowing across the space.
