7: Maxey's Barber Shop + Going Street Market

1 sound

Donna Maxey reflects on her father Charles Maxey’s foundational barber shop and the ethos and community which surrounded it. Charles Maxey’s barber shop was foundational in shaping Black entrepreneurial culture in Albina. The shop trained barbers including Geneva Knauls, who later opened her own barber shop and beauty salon. Going Street Market, a beloved community store now owned by Charles Bedford, was formerly owned by Mr. Maxey.
