Frosh & Flex - Monica Xu

1 sound

This composition was created with the mindset of one walking through Victoria Hall to enter the Lazy Scholar as a first year student living in residence. Some program notes include using the binaural plug-in to create depth and space in the sounds. I did this by emphasizing the placement of certain noises (ie. dropping something in the garbage was placed very low). I also changed the size of the room using the plug-in to change the sound and put an echoing effect on the sounds. I made sure certain noises happened "behind" the person to mimic a person walking through the area. I also played around with the width of the sound to change how focused the location of each sound was. It was also interesting to hear the differences the "texture" of the walls created (ie. glass would provide more of an echo-like expansive sound, whereas drapes muted the sounds slightly and they didn't seem to travel as far). I also tried to create contrast by putting sounds that panned to the extreme opposites to allow there to be more space and for the listener to hear distinct differences.
