Sun Voyager

To celebrate 200 years of Reykjavik, the western part of the city organized a competition. The statue that you are seeing won first place, and the finished product was unveiled on the 18th of August 1990, to mark the city's birthday. The boat is supposed to be an ode to the Sun, or a dreamboat. The artist, Jón Gunnar Árnason, wanted the sculpture to represent hope, freedom, progress, and undiscovered territories.
