Despite the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967, hostility against LGBT Mancunians remained. This sentiment was particularly shared amongst police who performed routine raids on gay-affiliated venues. In 1978, the police raided Napoleon’s under an ancient by-law called Licentious Dancing, which prevent two men or women from dancing with one another. But this didn’t stop the bars and in 1985 the owners of Napoleons, The Rembrandt and the New Union came together to create a small August bank holiday event in the village, which would later become the PRIDE weekend we know today.
