In 1975, six gay men came together in a back bedroom and decided to provide information and support services for a growing number of individuals who had come out. This became known as the Manchester Lesbian & Gay Switchboard Services (MLGSS) and was vital in offering dedicated help to the community, particularly in the backdrop of Section 28 and the HIV epidemic. In the year 2000, a merger between this support service and Healthy Gay Manchester made history to become The LGBT Foundation, one of the largest charities for the community in the UK. Despite the close of the Foundation building during the pandemic, they continue to deliver services to hundreds of thousands of people each year.
