Status. 2 category. Species rapidly nearing extinction. Habitat. Several places of finding known in Southern and central territories. Biotope. Steep clay ledges and locations with old clay buildings. Partly synanthropic species. Biology. Because of its similar appearance with Martes martes, often hunted by accident. Fights among males are common during which the weaker usually dies. During the summer feeds on plants, hunt small brown furred animals during the winter. Breed 2 offspring per year, which are cared for a long time. Inhabit steep clay ledges and in burrows, dug close to clary building walls, often in big families. Hiss when frightened. Abundance. Species only found singularly until now. According to unverified data, several colonies in burrows near clay houses in several settlements have been observed. Now larger colonies are estimated to reside in clay quarries. Main reason of decrease – destruction of clay houses in villages and of other locations suitable for habitation, and the hunting of the creatures when confused with Martes martes. Protection. Preservation of old clay buildings. Level of dangerousness: 2. Poses no danger to humans.
