Inspired by Two Lines Oblique by George Rickey, this composition explores the sculpture’ s movement, material, relationships, and more through sound, similar to the themes found in Rickey’ s artwork. The melodic structure reflects the motion of the two lines at the top of the pole, while the high-pitched timbres mirror the bright, metallic quality of stainless steel. Layered eighth note patterns also evoke a sense of motion and growth, while the overall symmetry of the composition echoes the balance between the two lines in Rickey’ s work. Using a synthetic flute and an acoustic string instrument, the piece balances fluidity and percussive texture, much like the sculpture itself.
