Circle/Shape Three: Oyá (Ollá)

1 sound

This circle honors Oyá (Ollá). She has fierce female warrior energy, eases communication between the living and the dead; she brings sudden change, summons the tornadoes and lightning to battle her enemies; can bring death; rainbows and lightning are signs of her presence and she is the favorite lover of Chango= Saint Catherine (Sta. Catalina/Candelaria) = Archangel Azriel; meets souls and helps them transition into death and helps the ones who mourn them.

In Circle Three: (Oyá/Saint Catherine/Archangel Azriel)

We hear emergency vehicles—this could be recorded or live.

Displayed on the tarot card: Death Recorded Sound: The sound of emergency vehicles turns into the sound of hard blowing wind, which segues into the female energy guitar sound of Oyá’s music? SAINT SPEAKS LIVE Recorded Line: I am waiting for a new season to begin—One with wings. ANGELS WILL WHISPER: Printed on a protest sign: [Sign held up by an actor] “Time to plant tears, says the almanac.” -Elizabeth Bishop-

CANDELARIA, a woman in mourning of Circle Three, raises her arms to plead with the Heavenly Beings. SHE alternates between pleading up and crying downward toward the earth. SHE is dressed like the earth, in ripped clothing of browns and greens. SHE is soiled and filled with loss.

CANDELARIA: (live) I memorized the dryness on the tips of his fingers so I would dream about them, but his shallow, painful breath became my memory. (The recorded music plays. Or the preceding words could be looped into an echo. SHE/THEY begin to rub her fingers together and seeds, imaginary or real, appear for her/them to spread all around the circle. The ANGEL helps her. It is like a ritual where the seeds all around the circle mark the inner circle as safe sanctuary. Like how salting the earth around you keeps out evil spirits. This planting action may be mirrored by all the actors in their respective circles. Then...)

CANDELARIA(s)of Circle Three: (live, one voice or three) [OR: possibly all the actors say the following lines...] 1: I won’t stop mourning— 2: But now is the time 3: to plant hope.

ALL ACTORS REPEAT THIS IN UNISON 1: I won’t stop mourning— 2: But now is the time 3: to plant hope.

CANDELARIA picks up protest sign and speaks text: “Time to plant tears, says the almanac.” -Elizabeth Bishop- Sets down protest sign with ceremony

END OF LOOP – ANGELS GUIDE AUDIENCE TO NEXT CIRCLE; SAINT CONTINUES TO LOOP MOVEMENT WITH TEXT AS NEEDED

OHM Sound\_copyright 2020-2023 I am deeply grateful to the many beautiful people and organizations who contributed their time, energy, and creativity to the realization of this piece in the world. - C. Amigo NOTES: Written for ten to twenty-four voices/actors: 7 Saints, 7 Orishas, 7 Archangels, 3 Guardian Angels. The actor’s lines will be written in threes, but one actor could read all three lines. Recorded sound will be a sound enhancement to the live action by the actor(s) present. Each circle will have 1-3actors: an Orisha, a Saint and an Archangel. If there is only one actor per circle, then that person will personify all three characteristics—Orisha, Saint, Angel. Ideally there will be 7 circles. And the “set” may be a large tarot card for each circle, and the “costumes” will reflect either an orisha, a saint or an archangel—or all three in one. All of it should look simple, elegant, but perhaps homemade. 1-3 Guardian ANGELS can walk around the audience and the circles and help with questions, getting people signed in, etc. I imagine this person dressed like San Martín de Porres or perhaps with black to light brown wings—a spectrum/kaleidoscope of color. Tune IN info is posted on Large Tarot Cards featuring different symbols for each circle. Circle One features the Magician on one side and instructions on the other which could be a QR code on the sign so people can point at the card and get connected to the Echoes App. Or the YouTube streaming of the sound? There can also be a fixed placard at the center of Circle One with all the instructions.
