Like a diligent student, I had devoted myself to obtaining as much information as possible about Famagusta, especially by studying the notes of other travellers who had visited it before us, and I was struck by the common thread in all of them reflecting the town’s melancholy. All of these notes, especially those of travellers who had encountered the Muses, such as Dante the poet, made mention of the gloom in the air of Famagusta. I was particularly struck by Dante’s words, who spoke with the voice of a Roman eagle of the town’s desperation, writing that Famagusta groaned ‘with sorrow and growled with anger at the selfish wickedness of the king.’ Even in his day, when the town experienced its greatest prosperity, when merchants and pilgrims brought wealth and luxury, Famagusta could not avoid a sense of melancholy.
