My soundwalk song is centered around Hanging Screen Sculpture #18 by David Vincent Hayes. The sculpture is a hanging abstract multi-faced metal piece. Hanging from a tree by a long piece of chord, the sculpture is able to respond to the wind by moving in different directions. This song was meant to invoke a feeling of calm, watching the statue blow softly in the wind. I also wanted to maintain elements of chaos, as the wind is unpredictable. Lastly, I wanted to incorporate metallic elements that remind the listener of the statue’s metal design. To create this environment, I used layers of synths and flutes, occasionally using sharper sounds to simulate the external environment and personify the sharp edges of the sculpture. Ultimately, I hope that the listening experience invites the listener into a world in which it is only them and the sculpture.
