Mill Chimney

1 sound

The tall brick structure in the corner is what's left of the old mill chimney. This is actually the 2nd chimney; it was about 180' high and was demolished in the early eighties because it had structural problems. In fact, you can still see a big crack in the ashlar stone there in front of you. So, when they demolished it, they the punched a hole in the bottom of the chimney and you can just see and where the hole was, and they then started at the top dismantling the bricks and though them down the chimney itself, and all bricks tumbled down to the bottom where they could gather them up and cart them off. Just to the side of the chimney you can see still a pulley wheel with a chain and if you look at the bottom of chain you can see a baffle, and this was how they could control the draw of the flue. The flu run underground all away from the boiler house halfway down the mill yard the chimney here. The 3rd and final mill chimney is actually a steel one located down by the boiler house, which you can still see today.
