Run up to the curb and suddenly stop. The drop is growing. Look down at the curb to see how it lifts off the pavement. Look down at ants, water, shrapnel, trash, edge, plastic, forever chemicals. Now 3 feet higher off the ground, look down at gravel, skin, tire. 6 feet off the ground, look for vibrations, ripples, waste, cardboard, debris, ash. Shuffle on the edge to one direction by leaping one foot to the other. Allow sounds to come in and out of view. Pat your body quickly as if you had lost something? Listen closely as if you had just missed something said? Where is the displaced sound? where is the error of sight? Where is the mutation of the border? where is the defective step? Interchange feet off and onto the curb as if long falling, trust falling. If this were the condition of a hundred, it would be trusted. If this were polite conversation, it would be trusted. If the pattern broke out like a rash, it would be trusted. If it was debt, word games, other animals, a bad hand, or fallout, it would be trusted.
