Status. 4 category. Rare, insufficiently researched species. Habitat. Conifer and deciduous forest lines in the West, found near cities. Biotope. It seems the species are prone to living in sparse pinewoods close to cities and larger settlements. Hibernate in cellars, underground. Biology. Spends the day in birdhouses, hollows, windowsill and wooden wall crevices. Breeding colonies settle in house wall crevices, in larger clearings among old trees sometimes makes nests on 1.5m in diameter. Fertile females create colonies of half a hundred individuals, which disperse in the beginning of August. Sedentary. Appears in places of hibernation at the beginning of September and remain in them until the middle of May. Have up to 38 teeth. Feeds on soft insects and eggs of flying creatures. Abundance. Almost unresearched. In known places of finding, this species is unabundant. A part hibernates in underground buildings in cities. Small abundance is determined by the decrease of places suit-able for hibernation, disturbance of peace and the hunting of the animals for pelts and taxidermy pieces. Protection. Preservation of old hollow trees in cities, parks, alleys, gardens and cemeteries. Making of burrows into the hollow spaces of pediments and house attics. Installation of artificial nests or large birdhouses. Establishing reserves in places of hibernation. The giving of reserves to locations of breeding and colony hideouts. Level of dangerousness: 2. Not dangerous to human kind.
