You are here: Stenenwal, 6221 EG Maastricht
The Watergate of Wyck is one of the oldest neighborhoods in town, part of the fortified city of Maastricht. Around the 13 Century, it was an important cultural and religious center for the Holy Roman Empire. Situated in the heart of what locals call Maas river, Maastricht was on the route from Cologne to Bavay, and the Romans built a wooden bridge across the river during Augustus Caesar’s reign to make this route faster. Since the year 1318, if you were traveling by boat, you would have entered the city through this same gate. Isn’t that amazing?
Fun fact: this is where the legend of the Duke begins, and also our detective adventure!
