Built in 1959, this building is currently undergoing an extensive internal redevelopment. Once completed, it will continue to be used by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, predominantly by design and visual art students.
Graham Sutherland was born in 1903. He studied art at Goldsmiths College, and later taught there. He is known for his art works in fabric, glass, prints and portraits. His connection with Coventry is that he was commissioned to design the tapestry which is on display behind the altar in Coventry Cathedral. The tapestry is named ‘Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph’ and is believed to be the largest tapestry woven in one single piece, woven on a 500 year old loom in France. It was unveiled in March 1962. His controversial painting of Winston Churchill is believed to have been destroyed by Lady Churchill.
