We Too

Radclyffe Hall (1880–1943) We Two Buried in Circle of Lebanon, Highgate Cemetery, London Radclyffe Hall was a poet and novelist whose life and work challenged the conventions of gender and sexuality in early twentieth-century Britain. Best known today for her novel The Well of Loneliness, Hall was also the author of several volumes of poetry. We Two brings fragments of Hall's poetry into the place where she is buried, setting her words against an echo of the Edwardian music-hall song Hello! Hello! Who's Your Lady Friend? Hall was known for dressing in masculine clothes and was sometimes called “John” by those close to her. Here the jaunty public voice of music hall meets something altogether more private: poetry of courtship, longing, pleasure and the life shared — and missed — between two people. Listen here. Listen to the sounds around you as well as those in your headphones.
