This was the bridge that carried the railway tracks across the Esk: the elegant curve of the river crossing was necessary to bring the tracks beside platforms that were parallel to the river bank.
About 40 years ago, it was re-opened as a road bridge to relieve the congestion on Bridge No.4 -- the 'Rennie' Bridge -- but by now the congestion is worse than it has ever been........
