Crafted from welded scrap aluminum and painted uniformly black, Sky Sentinels is an example of Louise Nevelson’s signature style of obscuring individual pieces, unifying small parts into a single work. The music accompanying this abstract sculpture captures this concept of melding many unlike pieces into one cohesive unit, starting with its ethereal and ever-evolving melody, played on a synth. This melody has no repetition in chord structure and an LFO effect, representing the many dissimilar pieces of aluminum, which when put together, form a cohesive sound. The composition carries a dark, yet upbeat four-on-the-floor rhythm, seeking to replicate the sharp edges of the sculpture. Lastly, the strong and slightly distorted synth bass is analogous to the black color of the sculpture, creating a lasting impression as you walk between sculptures in this garden.
