The Mouth
It is the place of joining forces
The river flowing mixing into the lake
Of the river’s inhabitants some go with the flow
And others move against it
Perhaps they are
searching for cattail fluff
escaping from a hawk
prospecting for food
Against the current implies, dedication
To the south a wondrous Great Lake
Hosting varied lives and livelihoods
Sculpins, shiners, minnows
lake trout, mysterious eels
All hidden in a world of
ice cracking
currents swirling
algae blooming
In murky depths or shallow coastlines
In spring migratory residents return
Large dark birds with turquoise mouths
Silhouetted on the lake’s horizon
Skeins rippling as they fly by
Some stop at the river’s mouth
Showcasing their abilities
flying and swimming
powerful legs propelling
sleek bodies darting
Their ancient voices calling to each other
