In 1892 an aviary was constructed in Golden Gate Park to introduce birds to the region. There were parakeets, silver pheasants, bald eagles, and of course, doves. The book Katie of Birdland was written to teach children about these flying creatures. In the book, doves were presented as “cordial and neighborly” and had formed their own Peace Society within the park. The aviary was removed in 1930, but the pigeons stayed, spreading throughout the city, nesting in buildings and hanging out on electrical lines.
