Crooked S

1 sound

During the Middle Ages this area would have been known as the Shambles - the slaughterhouse of Chichester. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Crooked S, sometimes known as Trumpet Lane, was occupied by workshops, cottages, stables and dungholes. The alley contained two distinctive ‘kinks’ along the route. The current shortened and straightened alley, or ‘twitten’, and open area beyond was created after 1943 when a German bomb fell on North Street and went right through into St Martin’s, killing people and demolishing buildings.
