Think of the relationship between humans and pigeons, oscillating between love and exasperation, reverence and annoyance. Doves, a symbol of peace and purity; pigeons, the feathered rats of the sky. In much of the world there is no distinction between the two birds, both simply referred to as حمامة (hamama) in Arabic, יונה (yona) in Hebrew or 鸽子 (gēzi) in Mandarin. Always there, on the sidewalk or square, pecking away at crumbs, whether or not we notice.
