This vital greenspace in Portland’s Black community continues to be the site of intergenerational barbecues, daily card games, and activist gatherings. Arietta Ward describes how, throughout the decades, music has remained present here — from impromptu park jams to live concerts. Sharon Gary-Smith and J.W. Friday speak on their experiences gathering with community in the park. Norman Sylvester describes the iconic cupola mounted on the park's gazebo. The cupola is from Matthew’s Drug Store, formerly located on the razed corner of Williams Avenue and Russell Street.
