This church remains a pillar for families in Portland’s Black community and beyond. Its rich musical legacy demonstrates the importance of fellowship through gospel music and the choral tradition. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the only church where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke during his 1961 visit to Oregon. Marilyn Keller and Ken Berry reflect on the importance of choirs and worship.
