Status. 2 category. A southern species, rapidly nearing extinction. Habitat. Singular places of finding are known in the South. Biotope. Lives close to fresh water pools, rivers. Biology. Mates in spring, in small water pools, springs, usually in moor puddles, among water plants. Adults are found on shores, among foliage. During winter, they hibernate in burrows, dug in steep river and lake slopes. Poor at flying, though scurries, is bouncy. Have large teeth, designed to bite through bones. Feeds on small animals. Abundance. Factors limiting abundance – the decreasing number and draining of small, swampy water pools and natural extinction. Protection. Preservation of small, swampy water pools and springs. Level of dangerousness: 2. Not dangerous to humans, bypasses them.
