In the winter, it can be an amazing experience to go out on the ice of Lake Torneträsk, since it is not something that you can do in the summer. Make sure that it has fully frozen (often between late January and May, and don’t try to walk on the ice near the canyon. Ice forms much less thickly near moving water.
Every week during the winter, Thomas Westin from the Abisko Scientific Research Station walks out onto the lake and drills several holes in the ice to measure the ice thickness.
