5: The House of Sound

1 sound

This genre-fluid incubator for Black music was a crate digger’s delight. The shop featured a variety of records throughout multiple eras including funk, disco, hip hop, and beyond. Solomon “Jumbo” David, J.W. Friday, and Tony Sibley speak about the joys of crate digging for records and DJing. Music and life lessons were shared across generations in this beloved community space. The shop’s iconic street signs were once an iconic landmark on North Williams Avenue, and can now be viewed at Going Street Market and Mississippi Records.
