There are records dating back to 3000BC that indicate the domestication of the Columbidae Rock Dove, although it’s likely this domestication dates back to the early Neolithic. Representations of doves have been found in Egyptian Hieroglyphics, in synagogues in the Negev Desert, and in the Catacombs of Rome. In Genesis, Noah sends out a dove to “see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.” It returned with an olive branch in its beak, plucked from the dry land. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim too released a dove, in order to find land after a long storm. It was a pair of doves that distracted the enemies of the prophet Muhammad as he hid in the cave of Thaw’r. They’re kept as pets, released at weddings, and are used on postage stamps advocating for peace. The feral pigeon, found in dumpsters, crowded streets, or on electrical lines, is this very same domesticated dove, returned to the wild.
