To Fawkon Walk

1 sound

The name Fawkon Walk probably derives from a corruption of ‘falcon’, the bird of prey. The Falcon on the Hoop was the name of a tavern mentioned in manorial court rolls in the 1390s, one of the earliest records we have of a named inn. Another inn on this site was the St George, also dating from the 14th century and quite a substantial place with six bedrooms and stabling for 40 horses when it was demolished in 1846. The last to survive on this site was the Griffin, pulled down before WWII. Continue walking south as far as the Golden Lion.
