Ada's Song by Brona Martin

1 sound

This is and excerpt from my composition 'Breaking the Chains' which was written as part of the 'Jazz as Social Machine' project at the University of Southampton, funded by the Alan Turing Institute. This piece of Docu-Music takes the listener on a journey where they can experience the sounds of the first computer, the writings of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage and Oral History Archives. The listener can also experience some live Jazz performances alongside AI generated Jazz Improvisations.

This excerpt explores some of the writings by Ada Lovelace who was a musician and one of the first computer programmers. You will also hear sounds from the first computer and electromagnetic sounds from modern day computers recorded using the LOM Elektrosluch 2 (induction coil pickup).

There is also a game to accompany this piece which you can experience during the Rapture Game Festival.

Brona is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Kent working on the AHRC funded project, A Sonic Palimpsest: Revisiting Chatham’s Historic Dockyards.
