Strelecky ostrov

Here, in September 1892 the group of "Amazons from Dahomey" performed. One of them – Gutta – fell ill with typhoid and died. Střelecký ostrov has not changed much since then. The building where the group of "Amazons from Dahomey" performed in September 1892 stands on the same spot and is the home of SK Start Praha – a sport club that trains people, among other things, in archery, an art practised by the Amazons from the ancient mythology. The so-called “Amazons” who performed here 130 years ago, however, did not use bows but rifles and in their native country they were called Mino – Our Mothers. The group consisted of 16 women and 6 men. We know the European phonetic spellings of some of their names, but we will never know how they sounded in the original pronunciation: Gumma, Gutta, Foma, Djaassa, Fengri, Kiema, Mamouna, Messi, Titi, Yenna, Alfa, Djobi, Gueba, Sengha.
