### About the work
#### ARTIST: JOSEPH YOUNG

The island of Ireland has been subject to many climatic events over the centuries and the idea of ​​the storm has particular resonance for our post-pandemic era. The basis for this work comes from binaural recordings made in the aftermath of Storm Brendan on the Killruddery estate in County Wicklow.

The text you hear comes from a poem by Sir Thomas Wyatt (1536) after witnessing the beheading of Anne Boleyn, the reverberations of which resonated throughout the kingdom. Now, as we consider a very different world unfolding in the future, the stillness of Alexandra Park offers us a space in which to consider the echoes of what came before and what is yet to come…

### About the work
#### ARTIST: CARMEN TORRANO MELLADO

During Huygens descent onto Saturn’s moon Titan, a recording of its surface was produced by converting some of the radar echoes it received into audible sounds. Utilising the intensity of the echoes, scientists speculate about the nature of the surface. Inspired by this and other remarkable journeys, such as, the first crewed lunar landing (1969) and the first explorers crossing oceans for the thirst of discovering new worlds, Carmen has created an imaginary sound-world of Titan.

Discovered in 1655 by the astronomer Huygens, Titan is the only moon known to have such a dense atmosphere. Other than Earth, it is the only known entity in space where clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found. The climate (including wind and rain) creates surface features similar to those on Earth and is dominated by seasonal weather patterns as on Earth. Titan's methane cycle is analogous to Earth's water cycle but at a much lower temperature of about -290.5ºF (-179.2ºC).

#### ARTISTS: JOHN POWELL & MICHAEL PETRY

In 2012, MAG made a 25th anniversary sound installation at the Palm Springs Art Museum called “The Dilemma”, which Powell has now reworked for gospel choir and orchestra. From these initial recordings with Gavin Greenaway, Powell knew he could turn the wonderful voices of Judith, Edie and the other singers into something else: and so formed “The Prize is Still Mine”, a strange mix of styles he has always liked: Gospel & early 20th Century Romanticism. It is composed to a Libretto by Michael Petry and features as the opening to Powell’s album “Hubris: Vocal Works by John Powell.”

### About the work
#### ARTIST: GABI SCHAFFNER

Playing on the sonic similarity of fast flowing/ falling waters and the sound of trains rushing by, “RAPID(S)TRAIN” combines selected recordings of German and other international train stations with recordings of rivers, waterfalls and oceanscapes. Central to the compositions are concepts of flowing, passing by, announcements, the din of voices, steps and trolley bags, the interplay of distance and locality. Both water and rail are part of the global system of transporting goods; they are as much linked to economy as they are to personal and sensual experience. Train stations form a re-sounding universe with past and presence rushing into an off-site future.

Each piece creates a fictional journey with Norba as its departure point. The combination of real-time field recording and samples, layering, acceleration and deceleration corresponds to the juxtaposition of microsound and melody, noise, language and signal. All four works have been specifically composed for SLEEPERTOWN.

“Sulfur Feathers” features the voices of over 20 women. It layers sounds collected in Berlin while on residency at Hošek Contemporary, with a written piece about naming places, lost things and watching for weather. From the sky come unexpected objects. They dissolve and elude their watchers. As weather comes and goes, compass points become obsolete and stars disappear. A chorus of women speak of place, ancestors and the missing.

#### ARTIST: RICHARD CARR

**P45** is a public sound art and listening project which focuses on collaboration, communication, and community. In the United Kingdom, and formerly the Republic of Ireland, a P45 is the reference code of a document which is usually issued when an employee is leaving work. It is commonly used by the public as a metonym for 'termination of employment' or for when one finds themselves 'in-between jobs'. With this in mind, P45 usually manifests to enable Richard and communities of place/interest to work together on the development of a new project. 

For Look North, Richard has re-composed and earlier work which was originally commissioned by Dani Gill for The Lighthouse Project Ireland. This collaborative and site-adaptive work was developed by Basciville, Richard Carr, and Sasha Terfous. It was made during a short working period at Hook Lighthouse, Ireland (The oldest, intact, operational lighthouse in the world) where the artists responded to the coastline of Hook head in Co. Wexford. A site first developed by Brittonic Priest and Pilgrim, St. Dubhán, later developed by William Marshall (1st Earl of Pembroke), and an important navigational point illuminating many international stories of historic sailors and fishermen between Ireland, UK, and mainland Europe.

The resulting work aims to give a personal, poetic voice to the landscape, while exploring these trans-national trading/settlement sites such as Hook Head, Ireland, Fisherinsel, Berlin, or Sailortown Belfast.

**For 100 years, Medusa has cast her unflinching gaze from the Art Deco Bank on Royal Avenue.**

Medusa’s Notebook is a digital immersive experience  - a unique perspective of Belfast from the 1920’s to the present and into the future in the voice of Medusa. Her effigy, intended to ward off the 'evil eye',  appeared on Bank of Ireland banknotes for many years and it is carved into the Art Deco bank on Royal Avenue. 

BAFTA nominee Roisin Gallagher is the voice of Medusa, scripted as a vivid narrative poem written by the acclaimed Belfast-based poet Maria McManus.

The soundscape is designed by NI Music Album of the Year Award winner ARBORIST (Mark McCambridge).

'Line Work' is a poem that was commissioned by Translink as part of their rejuvenation of the York Street underpass. The poem is on the ceiling and along both sides of the underpass, there is stunning artwork, inspired by nature and the city, from Derry/Londonderry and Belfast. This was led by Seedhead Arts. 'Line Work' was inspired by travel, connection, and the poets in Translink's Poetry in Motion campaign. ### About the work
This new poetry walk is a collaboration between The John Hewitt Society and Irish Artist Richard Carr. It is located in the iconic Waterworks Park in North Belfast. 

Geolocated around Swan Lake it presents a layered binaural field recording of the natural sounds found in the park with two poetry readings by Dr. Frank Ferguson of The John Hewitt Society. The first of these poems “A Local Poet” is found at the lower benches on the Queen Mary’s entrance side to the park and the second “Balloons and Wooden Guns” is located at the Armchairs sculpture at the far end of Swan Lake.
